[Newsip] Newsip, the reprise

hello

You may recall, in the back end of 2007, we had a system called newsip, which made phone calls, but didn't do much else. One of the things it was meant to do, was lit lamps.

Well, to cut a long story short, which involves an international effort between romanian, polish and english developers and quite a lot of infrastructure re-engineering, last week we rolled out a completely new version of "newsip" - and this one does lit lamps.

(As well as quite a few other bug fixes and general improvements.)

So, I would encourage you (again) to try running your test extensions on newsip.gradwell.net.

How to setup presence?

Presence works best on snom phones, using version 7 of their firmware (http://wiki.snom.com/Firmware/V7/ReleaseLaunch), but we have also tested with the Grandstream GXP2000 and GXP2020.

== Snom Phones
On a Snom, go to the function keys section, and on the P1 -> P7 light options,

	1/ select your extension from the drop down menu as the source
	(e.g. 23455678@newsip.gradwell.net)

	2/ Choose the "Extension" type

	3/ Enter the other extension you wish to monitor. e.g.
	<sip:3456789@newsip.gradwell.net;user=phone>

Snoms / the system works peer2peer, so you appear to need a matching entry on the other side. You can view the current "subscriptions" each phone has using the "Subscriptions" option.

Shared Line - with this now you can implement a proper "shared line", and have multiple phones registered on the same extension. If you do it normally, then it should 'just work', but if you enable the shared line function on the Snom phones "Identity 1 -> SIP", then, if you are on the phone on one of the handsets, the extension should appear busy if some one else rings in.

You can also enable "publish presence" under advanced settings "sip".

My snom 360 is available here if anyone needs a reference: http://79.135.96.44/

Now, with the Grandstreams

When configured with key light as "asterisk BLF":
- snom320 (3XX) and grandstreams can be monitored
- light changes on snom3XX picking up phone, receiving calls, etc
- light flashes when monitored phone gets call and can be picked up on monitoring grandstreamm

when configured with key light as "presence watcher":
- registers for ``presence'' event on server:
- gets information from other gxp (dnd / free)
- doesn't change light if the snom changes status

To configure the Grandstream, go to "Basic Settings" and put the user id you are monitoring into the "UserID" field.

---

Finally, if you are monitoring an extension, Group Call Pickup should be possible, by pushing the relevant button when the other extension is receiving a call.

---

We'd welcome as much feedback as possible on this list! The presence implementations across vendors all vary hugely and it is not 100% clear what does and doesn't work on different phones.

cheers
peter
